With less than 100 days until the Olympics (and of course, a busy Summer ahead with the Paralympic, Wimbledon and Euro 2024 too) let’s look at some new sports podcasts.

There have been a batch of new sports podcasts lately so here’s a quick recap.

Heroes & Humans in Football unpacks the biographies of some of the most well-known people in football and their legacy. Hosted by Mehreen Khan, Economics Editor at The Economist and Financial Times columnist Simon Kuper, they have just started a two-parter on Arsène Wenger and how his reputation has taken a knock. “What is it about Wenger when he was great, and then he stopped being great,” asks Kuper.

On I Did A Runner, Josh Patterson speaks to people who talk about how their lives have changed after getting into running. Recent interviews include Olympic and World Champion middle-distance runner Josh Kerr, world champion triathlete Beth Potter and mental health ambassador and physician Dr Alex George.

The Jack Murley Sports Show features interviews with LGBTQ+ sportspeople and the difference they have made, whilst The Sports Agents have a special episode this week looking at race representation within sport and what lessons need to be learnt.

The Curious History of Your Home
If you think that a podcast looking at the history of wallpaper, the household fridge and dishwashers wouldn’t be a totally engrossing listen, you would be wrong. This new series by domestic historian Ruth Goodman unpacks the history of everyday objects is fascinating, as you learn how an item became part of the routines of billions of people around the world.

Take the humble bath. Although its history can be traced back to the bathing culture in the Roman era, its history stems back even further, back to 2500 BC and the Buddhist monasteries at the Mohenjo-Daro in Pakistan. And whilst bathing is more commonly associated with hygiene and cleanliness, it has a long association with spiritual renewal.

“Every object in your home has a fascinating hidden history,” says domestic historian and host of this podcast Ruth Goodman. “A story that is just waiting to be told.” Trust me. She’s not wrong.

The Apple & The Tree
A neat idea for a new series, presented by Vogue Williams, hones in on the conversations that we don’t have with our closed loved ones for one reason or another, perhaps because we never really get round to doing so (but really should.)

Each episode features a parent and child asking each other about their shared history, their background, their regrets and their hopes for each other. And with episodes recorded in their homes rather than in the studio, it creates an environment where the conversations feel really rather intimate. And the conversations are unstructured, allowing the contributors to come to their own conclusions.

Your Next Podcast
By following Your Next Podcast every week you'll have a brand new show ready to listen to without doing any work. That's what the host Lauren Layfield does.

This week it's The World's Hardest Puzzle. In 2012, a mysterious organisation known as Cicada 3301 announced itself on the message board, 4chan. The cryptic post appeared online, seeking 'highly intelligent individuals.' What followed became known as the hardest puzzle on the internet. One that took players across the internet and into real-world locations. After two years, it disappeared - and was never seen again. The final puzzle was never solved. Nearly a decade later, the show asks who was behind these mysterious puzzles? And what did they want to achieve?

The Butterfly King
A series exploring the strange death of King Boris III of Bulgaria. With his country hanging in the balance during the bloodshed of World War II, the official record in the decades since his death was that his death was caused by a heart attack. But award-winning journalist Becky Milligan isn’t that convinced.

“Since when does a sudden death span six days?” asks Milligan. “And here’s another thing that strikes me as odd: King Boris’ skin was covered in spots. I’m no Doctor, but it does not sound like a heart attack to me, and I’m not the only one.”

Could he have actually been poisoned? Who could have killed him? And if he was poisoned, why did the official record not reflect that? All episodes are out now.

How Was It For You? With Rachel Parris and Marcus Brigstocke
Comedians and couple Rachel Parris and Marcus Brigstocke have a new podcast where they talk about what they have been up to with relatable anecdotes (their first episode featured them going to the tip) and modern dilemmas (such as what time is it most suitable to open a packet of crisps) with wit and humour.

And of course, the chemistry between them is great. I mean, it should be, considering that they are in a relationship.
Thank you as always for reading (and listening), we’ll be back next Sunday with another newsletter.

I have my own podcast out next week. I’ll talk about it more in next week’s newsletter but it’s called The Bachelor of Buckingham Palace and the trailer is now available to listen to. The series is out tomorrow.
